Cash and margin accounts: read the obligations behind the trade

AI-assisted Stockatlass editorial. Educational information, not investment advice. The account label behind a trade deserves as much reading as the security's name. This article uses US investor-education guidance to distinguish payment from borrowing; it does not describe the rules of every country or recommend an account type. Investor.gov explains that purchases in a cash account require full payment without borrowing from the broker to fund those transactions. With margin borrowing, the broker lends against collateral in the account. Before interpreting a balance, check whether borrowing is enabled and whether money has actually been borrowed. Borrowing adds interest and obligations. The SEC's bulletin warns that losses can exceed the amount initially invested. A decline in collateral value may require extra cash or securities, and the broker may sell holdings without consulting the customer first. The customer cannot assume a right to choose what is sold or obtain extra time. Firms can also raise their own margin requirements. For an educational review, write down how interest is calculated, what assets secure the loan, which circumstances permit liquidation, and what notice the agreement promises. Record the source and date for each answer. An unanswered question belongs in the research note rather than in a confident assumption about how a broker will act. Cash accounts still have payment rules. Investor.gov's cash-account bulletin explains that selling a purchase before paying for it can constitute freeriding and bring restrictions. FINRA also notes that a cash account can hold securities such as stocks, bonds and funds; the label does not mean an account contains only cash. Fully paid investments can still fall in market value. Read the applicable agreement and current local rules. This overview deliberately avoids numerical borrowing limits and day-trading thresholds, which can vary by arrangement and change over time.
